The Third Brideswell International Celtic Festival From the Red Train

Bernina Pass

Exhibition of Charcoal Drawings July 1997

As part of 'The Third Brideswell International Celtic Festival' I exhibited a series of charcoal drawings called 'From the Red Train'. These drawings were inspired by time spent in the Italian Alps and in particular by a train journey taken in the summer of 1996 from Tirano in northern Italy to St. Moritz in southern Switzerland.

I first visited the Italian Alps in the summer of 1988 while I was studying drawing in Florence. On several subsequent summers I have returned to Italy to study and travel. For me, Italy's greatest natural beauty is represented by its northern mountains. I am simply fascinated by the scale and atmosphere of the landscape and that is what I was drawing.
